Johnny didn't do his own singing in "Cry Baby." He was dubbed by James Intveld. (I hated the movie to begin with...I had to sit through it for a friend's sake and still want those hours of my life refunded)

I think it's just rumored Anne Hathaway will play Johanna. But no matter who it is they're gonna have to do alot of work to make Johnny Depp look old enough to be her dad.

On the IMDB it shows a pic of the lady who will play Lucy Barker... and well, I guess Tim Burton is scrapping the "yellow hair" part if she and Anne are really cast. Even if they dyed their hair or wore wigs... you'd know they weren't blondes.

A few people mentioned things in the "script". Is it online somewhere? I'm curious to see what they're gonna leave out.

This was posted on Broadway World . com -

Quote:

John Doyle's recent revival of Sweeney Todd will play a limited engagement this summer at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, CA before hitting the road on national tour. The Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical is slated to run Aug 30-Oct 14th.
According to a casting call, scheduled for Jan 31st- Feb 2nd, the musical which features actors playing the entire score, will tour the US following the San Franscico dates. The national tour, playing October 22nd- July 2008, is being produced by Tom Viertel, Steven Baruch, Marc Routh, Richard Frankel, Ambassador Theatre Group, Adam Kenwright and Tulchin/Barnter/Bagert.

This production of Sweeney Todd, directed by Tony Award-winner John Doyle with 10 talented actor/musicians, won the Drama League, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and was awarded a Special Citation by the New York Drama Critics Circle.

Doyle is currently represented on Broadway with a revival of the Sondheim musical Company.

The recent revival, starring Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris, arrived on Broadway from a London engagement originally staged by the Watermill Theatre. The Broadway production recouped its entire $3.5 million investment just 19 weeks after opening.

Considered one of Sondheim's masterpieces, Sweeney Todd - the tale of the revenge-seeking "Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and his meat pie-baking assistant - originally premiered at Broadway's Uris Theatre on Feb. 6, 1979, with a cast led by Len Cariou (Sweeney) and Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Lovett), who both nabbed Tony Awards for their roles. Harold Prince directed the production, which was awarded the 1979 Tony for Best Musical.

Next month, filming of the Dreamworks' version of Sweeney Todd commences. Tim Burton's film will star Johnny Depp, Helena Bottom Carter, and Jim Broadbent.

Yay! I didn't get to attend the tale (see the revival) on B-Way so I hope the tours come thru to Saint Louis - or even Kansas City or Chicago! I'd be willing to travel if I hear the tour was anywhere near how good the B-Way cast was.

Has there been any word about Alan Rickman being in this movie? I'd heard rumors that he was going to be the judge....

Might be incorrect though. I wonder how well he can sing...

I looked it up and he was on the Cast list so the rumor must be true....

If Johnny Depp messes this role up we can always kill him and stuff him into a pie...
Although they always arrive over done.

Dammit... somehow I lost my whole post. And it was way too long for me to retype so here's the MAIN POINTS!

First, you can view the movie's cast list on --> IMDB

http://www.imdb.com/rg/title-top-link ... tle/tt0408236/fullcredits

Seeing as filming has started, I'd say the list is pretty accurate and no longer "rumored casting".

Second, squashing another rumor - no Anne Hathaway as Johanna. 19 year old Jayne Wisener was cast in the role in late December.

Read more --> Belfast Telegraph Article

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/new ... tional/article2097943.ece

Third, the cast list also names "Ballad Ghosts" - curious know what EXACTLY that is. I assume of course they sing the numerous reprises on "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" - but normally that's done by characters... like customers, people on the street, etc... So are these ghosts of people Sweeney has shaved/killed singing the ballad? Do we even SEE them, maybe it's just voice overs. I'm anxious to see them pull that off. I know an early announcement said Christopher Lee was a "Ballad Ghost" (or something similar), but that the idea was scrapped.

Fourth! I have uploaded "Sweeney Todd in Concert" onto YouTube.

Description:

The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra's 2001 concert production of Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street", a musical thriller of revenge and romance set in Victorian England.

Features Broadway diva Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett and veteran stage actor George Hearn in the title role. Lisa Vroman as Johanna and Davis Gaines as Anthony Hope.

Part 1 ~ http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR1z0yW_ELc

I had pasted all the links, but there's 16 and I cannot make myself redo them all. You should be able to get to the rest of the parts easily by scrolling thru "Related" on Part 1. Or just clicking my username and searching my vids. They're named very specific, so you don't really have to "search".

Fifth, Princess of Humbug, please try to use the edit button to add to your posts instead of "double posting". Everyone has "double posted" before so it's an easy mistake. Especially if you decide the next day there's something more to add and the edit button has disappeared already - but your last 2 posts were only about 1 minute apart and the edit button should still be present in that short amount of time. Thanks! And welcome to the website....

OMG yeah another musical movie! Okay I really hope they don't mess up with Hairspray...It just makes me mad when people watch Grease the TV show, HSM, and Hairspray that they are fans of Broadway...Oh Well i'm SUPER excited. My teacher was in Sweeny Todd and she showed us a recording of the play, it was really good, though we couldn't really hear it, oh well i'm sure it i'll be great! *squee*

Promo shot for the movie. Anybody seen more?

BTW, Helena Bohnam Carter is pregnant and her baby is due around the movie's release. I wonder how much promoting she will end up doing because of that.

ok....so i searched this subject and i don't think it's been discussed in depth. so ok.....

i am a really BIG fan of sondheim, and if anybody else is than they totally will get where i am coming from. now that they are making a Sweeney Todd movie, i am worried that a whole bunch of kids that love johnny depp and tim burton and stuff will start to say that they love Sweeney Todd and stuff when they really just saw the movie, and they wont' really get a chance to know the music and for god sakes, the composer!!!!

I myself think that johnny depp is a great actor but he is also very popular and a lot of kids may not pay any attention to the real stuff and just pay attention to the "hot actor" and stuff.

I'm not trying to say that the movie won't be good and people shouldnt' go see it but if you are going to see the movie and say that you are a Sweeney Todd fan, at least learn about the original. the thing is that a bunch of my friends are big Johnny depp fans and they keep on saying how much they love Sweeney Todd when they don't even know any songs from it or anything. just because a big name like Johhny's is attatched to this movie it's "selling out"

this is a lot like what happened to POTO....no???

so to get the end already....what are your veiws on this and what do you think.

I have no idea if Johnny Depp can sing well enough to do the role justice. I'm not a big Sondheim fan, but I would hope that the singing is better than in the POTO film. Sure, a lot of Depp fans will go see the film just because he is in it, but as with the POTO film, SOME of them will get caught up in the music and go on to listen to more Sondheim.

I'm scared. Do I want to pay seven bucks to see Johnny Depp sing? Um...no.
I wanted to see Sweeney Todd in San Francisco, but my parents said I could go see the movie.
NOT THE SAME.

Hey, even if it's a nightmare (Which it probably won't be), I'd pay eight bucks to watch Johnny Depp for two hours.

Just kidding. Johnny Depp is an excellent actor and there is much, much more to him that just his looks. (Not that I don't like his gorgeous-ness...)

I've seen pictures of this movie. His hair in it makes him look like Beethoven.

I'm excited for this movie. Really excited. Particularly because of Tim Burton. If anything, it's going to be both interesting and unique.

Ha, my mom said the same thing. I told her that when Sweeney Todd comes to our theatre next year if I could get tickets. She looked at me funny and said, "What's the point in that? The movie's coming out soon, isn't it? Just go see that." My eye was twitching the whole time. And she calls herself a fan of broadway!

Anyway, the movie does have a good cast. That doesn't mean they'll be able to sing it perfectly, but a cast like that will get people to go see it. Sure, we'll get the superficial people gushing about how they love Sweeney Todd even though they don't even know it was a play, but it'll still get the musical some attention. Ticket sales might go up, and the show will run a little longer. Assuming that the movie does well, of course. But hey, its Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Questions of success are simply out of the question.

To echo Leigh-I'd pay eight bucks to watch Johnny Depp for two hours! He's got an interesting approach to his craft; I'm anxious to see what he does with the ole Demon Barber.
Helena Bonham Carter looks like a truly mad Mrs. Lovett-she'll be great!
I can forgive much bad singing if the acting is good.
(actually, I'm pretty easy to please-the Phantom movie and A Chorus Line were ok in my opinion.)

Is it me, or does this site kind of lie? I mean it said watch tralier here and I clicked, getting excited for a trailer finally, and I found no tralier...Also, it already has a rating which is PG-13, but, I heard that ST was going to be rated R. I'd see this more of an R movie, personally...Also, new teaser poster!

I heard somewhere.... that they cut out a TON of the singing. Some of the leads aren't even going to sing.

    Anyone else hear this?

I heard a vague rumor that a few of the songs were cut, but nothing beyond that. I also read an article that a rumor about Johnny Depp's voice being dubbed was quashed by Tim Burton himself, if I recall, and he said that Johnny is indeed going to be doing all his own singing.
Sorry I don't have the link to that particular article. I never saved or recorded it, and I'm not quite sure how to find it again.

Overall, I'm a big fan of Tim Burton, but I'm a little dubious at his trying his hand at a stage-to-movie adaptation. His directorial style is very pronounced--a Tim Burton film is easy as pie to pick out of the masses because of its unmistakable color schemes; dull grays, whites, and blacks; other colors are so brilliant they're almost psychedelic; costuming and hairstyling are often bordering on the ridiculous, etc. I'm not sure how that's going to translate over to this particular storyline, though I suppose it somewhat fits the morbid overtones well enough.

Interesting, isn't it, how often he uses Johnny Depp in his movies. Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride...and now this.
