You know, I'm really undesisive about Sweeney being older or younger. He'd have to be at least thirty, since he had a wife and a baby. However, being quite a bit older, around late fourties or fifties, gives him character. Any thoughts?

Anyone thought about Victor Garber? He's not an unknown and he has played the part on Broadway...but alas JD has already got the part. And about the age thing the youngest he could have had a daughter was let's say 18. And Johanna seems like she's around 17-20. So the youngest Sweeney could be is 35. But like Yumi-Chan said I think it would be more fitting if Sweeney was atleast in his 40's. Mrs. Lovett can't be no spring chicken either it's apparent through the lyrics that she is 40-50 years old. Oh, EowynOrgana I was able to easily find Sweeney Todd on Amazon. Here's the link: Sweeney Todd Revival CD

Thanks,sabrinafair!
Here is my cast... Mrs.Lovett-Patti LaPone...who else? Anthony-Patrick Wilson. Tobias-Neil Patrick Harris. Johanna-Anne Hathaway. Turpin-Simon Callow. Sweeney-Michael Cerveris.

It's Patti LuPone but I'm not sure if she would be a good movie Lovett. I think they are going to be doing a lot of the movie based on the original production rather than the revival. So I’m guessing who ever they cast will be more of an Angela!Lovett than a Patti!Lovett As for Michael...um...I'm not sure if he'd be as powerful on screen as he is onstage. Some parts of the show I really prefer Hearn/Cariou rather than Cerveris. Such as he makes such a big deal out of Lovett finding out he's Todd yet when the Beggar Woman in the beginning says "Don't I know you" he's like I don't care just go away; you're bothering me.

Maybe you're right,Sabrina...maybe we need somebody 'old school' and not 'coolier'.In my opinion,Burton will f**k up the show if he casted Depp.
A bit of trivia...I read somewhere that during one show,Angela Landsbury lost a tooth! She had to do the rest of the song singing out of one side of her mouth...she said:"You know what they say...'you gotta grin and bear it'.Well, grinning wasn't the thing to do at the time." Does anybody own those silly aprons with the poster on them?We gave ours away...it was ugly looking...

Well, I believe he didn't think anything of the Beggar Woman because she had just demonstrated that she's bats**t crazy ("How would you like to split me muff, dear, A little jigg-jigg.."). So he probably thinks she doesn't know what she's talking about and even if she did, no one would believe her. But Lovett's a different story. She seems sane enough to be a threat. Anyway, as much I as I would like to see Michael on screen, Johnny's a done-deal....unfortunately..... ![]()

Victor Garber is a tenor, not a baritone. He played Anthony on Broadway when he was younger, not Sweeney. Johanna is 16, if you do the math. She was one year old when Sweeney was arrested; he came back 15 years later. So, 16.

News on Johnny Depp as Sweeney:
He was put into a voice test, of which he passed. I believe it was even before Sondheim himself, so he's gotta be tolerable. Not that this is exactly a good thing, but his wife is now giving him extra training in vocals. I don't know much about Vanessa Paradis or her training, but she seems to be pretty pop to me... anyone's thoughts on this?

Um... I really don't know. Here are some lyrics to Poor thing: Well, Beadle calls on her all polite, Poor thing, Poor thing! The judge, he tells her is all contrite, He blames himself for her dreadful plight, She must come straight to his house tonight, Poor thing, Poor thing! Of course when she goes there, poor thing, poor thing, They're 'avin' this ball all in masks! There's no one she knows there, poor dear, poor thing! She wanders tormented and drinks, poor thing! The judge has repented, she thinks, poor thing! 'Oh, where is Judge Turpin,' she asks... 'E was there alright, Only not so contrite! She wasn't no match for such craft, y'see, And everyone thought it so droll. They figured she had to be daft, y'see, So all of them stood there and laughed, y'see! Poor soul! Poor thing! So, maybe... she was embarrassed and she realized she was alone (since Turpin shipped Barker off south) and she just... poisoned herself? Whatever she did is beyond me, really.

That's how it's been staged in some of the productions I'm familiar with...such as the 2002 Kennedy Center version. The recent B'dway revival didn't depict the assault on her, though.

Although Lovett does hump the cofin...so I'm guessing the Beadle and/or Turpin raped Lucy. Was it the Kennedy Center version that had Turpin appear to be naked?

Pretty much every production's had Turpin be naked underneath his robes; I dunno about the revival, and I'm sure high school/college productions don't do it.
I don't know how you couldn't get rape from that scene; it is very clearly insinuated. Why else would she try to kill herself?

Even without the staging though, I think the song makes it obvious. Also how she attempted suicide afterwards.

Is anyone here a member of the Sweeney Todd livejournal community? Earlier today at another computer I found some high-res scans of what looked like a brochure. For some reason my computer won't let me access livejournal (it's a business computer). Would anyone be so kind to pm or post the links of those pictures here?
Thanks.

Supposedly Sacha Baron Cohen is probably going to be cast as Pirelli in the upcoming movie.*
Also supposedly "The Contest" will be turned into dialog [insert your cursing here]. Any ways here's a trailer of Cohen's other upcoming movie: http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/borat/

I was praying they wouldn't do this...that they might cast her in a minor part...I think even casting her as the Beggar Woman might be better than this...
Is Tim Burton trying to kill "Sweeney Todd"???? Helena Bonham Carter casted as Mrs. Lovett

I'd much rather see her as The Beggar Woman. I like her as an actress well enough (except in that Merlin movie with Sam Neill),but...er...as Mrs. Lovett? It doesn't click with me.
