Who is your favorite fictional villain? Beware spoilers...

It's so very hard to choose, so here is a list:
(If anyone's choices peak your interest, go read the book. Yay for literacy!) Once again, watch out for spoiler, villains have a sad tendency to die...
1. Achilles, from the Orson Scott Card's sequels to Ender's Game. He is a cold-blood serial killer; he is compelled to kill anyone who has ever seen him in a position of weakness. The scary part? He's just a kid.

2. Raistlin from the Dragonlance series by Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman. Every villain is the hero of their own story. Golden skin, hourglass eyes, and the horrible cough. Oh yeah.

3. Tigerstar from the Warrior's series by Erin Hunter. The way he died was horrible. I'm not telling-go read the books.

4.The Gloamglozer from the Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewert. This nasty guy is all about revenge.

Hello? Somebody reply; I would be able to emerge from my corner of angst and shadows.

Heyy.. interesting thread.

1. Dr Hannibal Lecter. A creepy cannibal with a genius mind.
2. Dr Nii Jianyi alias Ukoku Sanzo from the manga Saiyuki Reload. You simply CAN'T figure out what's he up to. He's creepy, silly, annoying, and a jerk. And cute.
3. V from V for Vendetta.
4. Erik the Phantom from Phantom of the Opera (duh). Is he actually a villain, though?

Huh. I always thought V was the good guy! He seems too cool to be a "villain"...but then again, he was technically a terrorist... 0.0;;

Now let's see...you know this is a hard question, because a lot of my favorite fictional characters are already villains. I guess I'll try to list at least 4 or 5 (in no particular order). Here goes. Mind you, this list will probably change within the next few weeks, but as of now...:

1) Darth Vader (The ultimate^^ RAWK)
2) Ratigan (from The Great Mouse Detective! He has a cool theme song, and he kicks the snot out of Basil! XD)
3) Macavity (from CATS! He's sneaky and mysterious. Also, he has a cool theme song ^^)
4) Mephiles (from Sonic the Hedgehog '06...the game ain't so great, but this villain is actually pretty evil)
5)

...I wonder if Q from Star Trek: TNG counts as a villain...he freaks me the hell out. 0.0

I left 5 blank because, anime fan that I am, I tried to think of an anime villain I really liked.

I couldn't.

Number 2, my nominated Disney Villain, was originally Cruella deVil, simply because she's so insane! She's still high on my list, though. ^^

Also, because of most people's modern understanding of PotO, I intentionally left Erik off this list because I think people prefer to see him as an anti-hero rather than a villain. However, in the Leroux novel, he IS pretty villainous.

I like especially female villains.
1. Miss Hyde from Hammer film Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde. Scarlet-dressed Jill the Ripper stalking streets from the Victorian London of Hammerverse.
2. Brides of Dracula from Van Helsing. Gorgeously dressed blood-thirsty beauties, full of life.
3. Lucy from Bram Stoker´s Dracula (1992).
4. Count Dracula himself.
5. Jack the Ripper. You know, not serial killer murdering real people BUT character of fiction.
6. Vampires from Jeanne Kalogridis´s Diaries from Family Dracul.

Hikaru-chan: I dunno, Q's kinda in the middle. He's good, but bad at the same time. He creeps me out as well, too much power for such an...unstable?...being.

A villain from Star Trek(DS9/TNG) that I like is Gul Dukat. Besides being one of the most sexy cardassians, he's pretty evil.EX: Picard:"THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!" Dukat:"No, there are five...*zaps Picard with uber torture thing*"(What episode is that from?) That episode actually made me uncomfortable....But at some points, he acts nicely towards people, totally at random.

SPOILER:Doesn't he end up going insane?

Another from Star Trek(Generations) is the Borg Queen. For some reason, I keep thinking she looks like a fish and fungus together(I know, weird description of her...). As well, the way she tried to get Data to join the Borg was exceptionally evil.

Hmm...Who else do I like?
1)Hannibal Lecter. Just plain awesome.
2)The Lich King from World of Warcraft. He turns everybody into the undead and if anybody on here plays WoW and has played a Death Knight, you know what I mean, just by doing the starting quests(though they are uber fun).

Hooray, I can stop talking to myself. These are all wonderful villains. (Especially Ratigan; I love Vincent Price's voice.) Here are some more I thought of:

5. Jadis/The White Witch from Chronicles of Narnia. She spoke the deplorable word that destroyed her home plantet, Charn. She killed Aslan, she is wonderfully evil.

6. Cluny the Scourge from Redwall. He was a clever little rat, yes he was!

7. The Other Mother from Coraline (book or movie.) Those big black eyes just stare at you...

8. Along with Dracula and Lucy, how about Renfield? I thought he was scarier than Dracula was.
I can't think of any goods ones at the moment. (Disney villains rock! As does Darth Vader.

.I wouldn't consider any of these villians. Dr. Lecter is a serial killer, yes, but he never killed without a reason. V did nothing but good, if you ask me. And Erik...well, he tried to be good. It's not his fault life was such a bitch to him.

My favorite "villian" is any villian that is psychologically complicated, struggling with themselves, trying to do good, and simply not. Victor Hugo's Javert and Frollo are perfect examples. Javert isn't trying to recapture Valjean because he wants to make Valjean's life miserable; he honestly thinks that Valjean belongs in jail; he has no idea that Valjean is a good man. Frollo honestly thinks that everything he does is the work of God; he has no idea how corrupt he is. Dolarhyde from Red Dragon (movie or book) is another great example. He knows what he's doing is wrong, and he struggles to stop.
Possibly my favourite "villian" of all time is Renfield in the Bela Lugosi Dracula. My fascination with him has inspired me to aspire to becoming a psychiatrist.

Valid point,DiesIrae. I love conflicted characters. We like all sorts here, from the slightly cheesey Disney gang to those who are tring desperately to figure out what they are. However, like I said before: Every villain is the hero of their own story. That doesn't make them any less evil. That is how it is for Raistlin. He is a wizard and has a twin brother. He forever lived in his brother's shadow. (Raistlin was frail and sickly since birth.) He attempts to achieve godhood in the later part of the series.
Spoiler:

In the end, he sacrifices himself to save his brother and the entire world. Raistlin watches his brother leave and he realizes how much he has missed. He desperately wants to make amends, but can't.

This thread is open to discussing what makes a villain as well as boasting about our beloved baddies.

Okay, I'll be the first to say it: The Joker!

Not just the Joker from Dark Knight, but from all Batman versions, from the animated show to the Jack Nicholson movie. He always has that sick sort of humor, and we all know he's not right in the head for whatever reason (how did he really get those scars?). The psychotic villains are always the most interesting to me. And just the idea that he doesn't have a plan, he just does whatever he wants, adds a whole new element of fear and strangeness to his terrorism of Gotham.

Grendel’s Mother - Beowulf

Fierce, dangerous, vindictive, and possessing an almost obsessive maternal instinct, this is a woman enraged, an emotion that unleashes her malevolency and the power of her determination as she becomes hellbent on revenge for the death of her son. She is cruel and merciless which makes her an impressive warrior, and from a woman’s point of view, it’s actually a bit difficult for me not to pull for her as she battles Beowulf on her home turf to avenge her child.

Iago - Othello

My favorite Shakespeare antagonist, this character is rotten from the inside out. He’s especially appealing because I love the potential of any villain who is scandalously ambitious and amoral (which offers much greater diversity than simply being immoral). Iago is a cynical and envious bastard who looks out only for himself and is completely devoid of a conscience. He’s also a master of the persuasive word, brilliant at it actually, and he knows just what to say and when to say it all the while remembering and keeping in order his numerous deceits. This shrewd ability evidences his keen intellect. Bad guys are entertaining, but smart bad guys are just plain “yum”.

A New Margarita: thank you for mentioning him. He is such a fascinating character. Every portral of the Joker adds another layer. We have no idea who he really is or what he's about.

Madame Masquerade: I agree completely about Grendel's mother. Also, in the way of Shakespeare baddies, how about Lady Macbeth? Her husband is a push-over but she is a real piece of work.

I do have a question about this statement. Why does Dr. Lecter's never having killed without a reason make him less villainous? Doesn't anyone who kills -- whether fictional or real -- have a reason for doing so? The reasons may not always make sense to the outside world but anyone who kills has a reason. (Which brings up the question of when, if ever, there is a good reason to kill -- but I believe that discussion would belong in a different thread.)

As for me? One of my favorite villains comes from opera, and that is Baron Scarpia, the nefarious Chief of Police who lusts after the opera singer Tosca, lover of the painter Cavaradossi.

I absolutely adore villains. Capricorn, from Inkheart, is one of my favorites -- My friend Tim and I are always debating whether Basta or Capricorn is scarier. I'm on Basta's side with this -- He's freaking just frightening!

As for the Lecter Good/Evil debate, I agree with DiesIrae. In Silence Of The Lambs [which I read over the summer,] Dr. Lecter is not the Antagonist -- It's Buffalo Bill. In Hannibal it's -- Oh. Dear. It kind of is Hannibal. [Crap, there goes my defense.] But he's not really even an Antagonist in that one either. It kind of becomes that guy -- I cannot remember his name for the life of me -- The sex offender? Yeah, he kind of becomes the villain. Then there's Red Dragon, my favorite, where Dolarhyde is the Antagonist, Will Grahm the protagonist, and Lecter a link between the two. Very similar to Silence, but with the extra flair of the killer not being so lame. [So lame he was mentioned in the movie 'Joe Dirt'.]

Back to my fave villains, though. Alot of them have to share spaces, which some of them dislike.

1. Hannibal/V/Erik
2. Capricorn/Basta
3. Kalona, from House Of Night
4. The Uber Director -- Maximum Ride[He's a bunch of organs, in jars, in a wheelchair -- jesus christ that's scary!]
5. --

On a side note, I'm very surprised no one's brought up Sweeney Todd.

5. Sweeney[?]
6. The Inquisition -- Man of LaMancha -- they're more of an outside force, though.
7. Dr. Chilton -- Cree-pee! *Shudderinfear*

Can't really think of any more! Eh, I'll try to think of more. It's like midnite here. I dunno -- forgot to set my clocks.

Yes. Disney villains do rock. ^^ If it's anything Disney knows how to do real well, it's make a good villain. And most of them have really cool theme songs (ex: Ursala has "Poor Unfortunate Souls", Scar has "Be Prepared", etc.)

Since people here were talking about Batman villains, I thought I'd bring up my favorite villain of all time - Catwoman.

I'm not talking about the version played by Michelle Pfeiffer (sp) in the movie. She was too much of a victim. I didn't know if I was supposed to feel sorry for her or what. I didn't like it. But I was lucky enough to catch on TVLand some old Batman TV shows from the sixties, where Catwoman is played by Julie Newmar. She was great. To me, she is (or was anyway) THE Catwoman. She was just so bad. And she had so much fun being bad. It wasn't because she had a bad past or anything. She was bad because she was bad.

There's so much confidence and strength in a character like that. I wouldn't try to come up with some master plan to take over a city, but she sure had the right attitude. Great outfit, too. If I could walk out of the house dressed like that and get away with it I would do it tomorrow.

I agree that Catwoman is a wonderful villain. She's actually more of an anti-heroine because she just constantly straddles that line between good and evil, so she isn't an out and out villain. I'm not counting Halle Berry's so-called "Catwoman" in anywhere, though.

I think the Joker is an interesting villain as he was the first sort of prankster character to be taken seriously as a baddie, and is such a perfect foil for the stoicism and seriousness of the Batman. Heath Ledger hit the nail on the head with his stunning turn, that is exactly what the Joker is meant to be like.

My other favourite villain has to be Darth Vader. He's such an iconic figure in that mask and cape, it's a truly frightening sight when he first steps into the Rebel Blockade Runner at the start of Episode IV. I enjoyed his redemption at the end of Episode VI as well, it was a fitting to end for what seemed to be a truly evil villain.

Varla from Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill! Best. Villain(ess). Ever.

Calculating, duplicitous, self-destructive, and can actually kick some ass. She is so charismatic and says so many classic lines that even though she’s an unstable force, it’s really hard not to root for her. And what do you know she’s actually sexy without being a size zero!

I also agree about Catwoman she’s one of my favorites too, though I don’t know who I like more, her or Harley Quinn.

I love Harley Quinn, it's toss-up between her and the Joker in regards to my favorite Batman villains. She is very entertaining character, but there are times when you see the underlying madness. She hides how dangerous she is better than the Joker does. You just think she's some goofy side-kick and then she goes off.

LMC!: I also liked Capricorn and Basta. I think Basta was more frightning, but Capricorn had a better name.

Ooh, time to dredge up Harry Potter villains. I think Barty Crouch Jr. was a great villain. He hid below the radar, and it was a real suprise when he revealed himself. Voldemort was alright, but I prefer Snape. (Even though he wasn't really a villain.)

Also, killing isn't the single most defining trait of a villain, I think. Heroes kill, and they often have good reason too. There are other ways to be evil; lives can be ruined in different ways. Killing, or otherwise becoming desensitized to violence is only the begining for some. When there is a total loss of remorse, that is more like true evil. Those who become so twisted and detached lose a degree of their humanity.

I like the subtle villains, ones that you're not entirely sure as to what they are about. Mass killing is terrible, but quiet manipulation is much more alarming.

Will you tell us why Iago is you're favorite, sporkgoddess?

Alrighty, time to bring up Oogie Boogie, who comes from my favorite movie ever. While he is forever in Jack Skellington's shadow, man can Oogie sing. I would laud Jack's greatness, but this is a villain thread, not gush about another living skeleton. (Leroux Erik, anyone?)

  • Well, I'm not sure about sporkgoddess's explanation, but mine is simply that Shakespeare created a person without any morals who will do whatever needs to be done to achieve what he wants, which is somewhat of a Machivellian idea. Iago was the epitome of all that is and was bad in that play.

There we go. Thanks, Leia. Please explain why you like the villains you do.

Does anyone here like Count Olaf? He was mildly pathetic, but had his moments. I liked the emphasis on his shiny eyes.

We now delve into folklore and mythology...

Baba Yaga and her house with chicken legs. This lady is very interesting. And while we're in this vein of folklore, how about Koschei the Deathless? He paints a rather impressive figure, I must say.

The villains of fairy tales are always very scary. (At least, in the orignals they are.) Walt Disney said that he hadn't intended for The Queen from Snow White to be that scary. She maintained a lot of what came from the original story. The Queen does seem more real in some ways. Does anyone agree/disagree? Do you think another Disney villain is worse than she is?

I don't know that she's necessarily worse, but my favorite Disney animated villain (or villainess) is Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. She's got a wonderfully moldering castle, wicked cool horns, and turns into a fantastic dragon. And to top it off, she's got this wonderful music by Tchaikovsky to back her up.

Yeah, Maleficent is great, too. I think what I meant was to that little children, rejection and being hunted like that is frightning. The villains from the classic films are much better than many of the modern ones. It's the same with the modern sequels to Disney films. They just aren't quite the same...

I had a thought-how about Dolores Umbridge? That pink toad that was fun and frustrating to read about at the same time?
