I agree wholeheartedly with phantomphan1990. I'm not a terribly big fan of double breasted tailcoats, even though I own one (strictly for showing horses, though). That frock is downright stunning. It certainly makes up for the price difference.

I love them both! Where did you find those? I would like to purchase them myself. PhantomTango1- what would be some good places to look for a nice Phantom tailcoat?

You're right- Just $10 more doesn't really hurt that bad. The only problem is that it's from the UK, so shipping might be a bit of a drag. The only thing I'm worrying about when it comes to shipping is the price. Plus, it takes eight weeks to deliver... Not that the tailcoat is any better. ![]() But the frock coat IS stunning, and I still love the tailcoat (once again, I would order it in black and replace the gold buttons with black ones. No, I'm not emo or gothic). I think that in the winter on those very cold evenings, I would put on the tailcoat and then the frock coat on top of it. The tailcoat would be buttoned up, and the frock coat on top of it. That's the style I like. But thank you for your opinion everybody! I think I'll order the frock coat first. I'm not sure when I'll do it, however. Probably eight weeks before Thanksgiving. Or perhaps soon so I can have it for fall... Anyways, a lot of thinking to do. But thank you everybody! More opinions would be nice, too. Thanks, -The Phantom

Future_Phantom!!! -
There are a number of places, namely eBay, antique stores in your area, and thrift shops. There's a slightly more in depth discussion on my costume page here: http://phantomonabudget.bravehost.com/costume.html A lot of it depends on what you're willing to spend, honestly. I had been pretty restricted in my budget, so I had to go looking around for deals, or wait for them to fall in my lap. I bought my first tailcoat on eBay for $15, but that is a modern coat, with modern lapels, and a modern cut. If you just want a tailcoat and don't want to spend a lot of money, that's a perfect option. Often they're former rentals that go for next to nothing. If you want something that's a bit more appropriate to the period, try checking around antique stores that might have clothing - I bought my current authentic Victorian set off eBay from an antique dealer, who acquired it from an estate sale. Trust me, that buy was pure dumb luck. Or if The Phantom would be so kind as to divulge his sources, those look like top quality pieces, though probably much more expensive, and rightly so. Let me know if that was helpful. :)

Yes, like yours. It's the lapels that I love. That's one of the reasons why I'm buying that frock coat.

Ugh, I agree the shipping from the UK would hurt a little bit, but on the other hand you have one amazing coat to look forward to. I love the silk facings on the lapels. That's one of my favorite touches on any coat.

I would have to agree with you. I once saw a dark navy-blue tailcoat with a similar lapel. It buttoned up (single breasted, though), was for an awesome price, but... It wasn't in my size! ![]() Funny how things happen like that. But I also focus on those general points when I choose my coats. Sadly, I don't have any like that... At least not yet. And I would have to agree that the shipping is worth it.

Agreed. That's what drew me to the coat and ultimately decided whether I was going to buy it or not. I was shocked to see that, since most of my searching only lead me to more modern (and in my opinion, cheap looking) lapel styles. The fact that it was of the proper cut and fit like a glove right out of the box was icing on the cake. Technically, I would be adding velvet or moleskin to the collar to make it more true to the stage show, but I immediately decided against it. I'd hate to ruin such an impeccable coat by adding unnecessary appointments.

You're welcome! Glad that was helpful. :) If you're looking for a place to get started looking at newer style, used tailcoats, might I suggest browsing some of thetuxxman's inventory:
http://myworld.ebay.com/thetuxxman He's the one I bought my modern coat from a couple years ago. Fantastic to deal with, good selection, good prices. If he doesn't have your size listed, or you can't seem to find what you want, just contact him. He'll probably be able to find it for you. Just throwing out one more idea - theatres in your area might occasionally get rid of some costumes. You never know, just keep your eyes open!

Thetuxxman is a great seller. I've bought from him several times, and he's never let me down! Anyways, I've decided to share all of my locations of Victorian clothing. Some of these websites have clothing for women, too. But mostly men.
-The Phantom's List of Historical Clothing Websites- Key: (*)= Bargain Website (-)= Moderatly-Priced Website (+)= Hellishly Expensive Website (-)The Gentleman's Emporium: This is one of my favourite websites. It seels very nice clothing and caligraphy supplies, as well as good pocket watches, hats, canes, and other things. There's even some attire for the ladies, too. (+)The Sutlers Stores: This website has VERY high-quality clothing, and has supplied clothing to several stage companies and movies. A tad on the expensive side, though... (+)Ushist (aka "Pair o' Dice Merchantile): Also a very good clothing supplier. The clothing however doesn't come cheap, and all of it is customized to fit your own needs. These people are the real deal... They supplies costumes for Back to the Future III. Seriously. (-)Jas Townsend & Son Inc.: Some good clothing here, but mostly good for other historical supplies. I would only suggest buying accesories from here, since the clothing isn't the best ever. (-)River Trade Junction co.: Another good website for clothing and other supplies. (*)Wild West Mercantile: Good bargain website. Check out their "Bargain Corral" for their list of bargained clothing. Mostly waistcoats here, though. (*)Victorian Costume: By far one of my favourite discount clothing websites. Where else do you see morning coats this cheap? (*)My Own Tuxedo: Very good bargain website for tailcoats and such. Extremely good customer service and pricing. (*-)Uniformal Wearhouse: These guys have some pretty well-priced formal clothing which could fall under the "Victorian" category. They have very good hats, tailcoats and ascots here. And that's the end of my list. Happy costuming!

The first dress on the Sutler's Store for the ladies (evening dress) is really pretty, and I love the 1860 days dress... simply, yet very pretty in its own way. True, it is on the expensive side... and how are we supposed to find our size if they're U.K. sizes?

Wow. The blokes actually got a chance to talk clothes for a change. Wanted to share my new waistcoat. I made it as well as the high collared shirt underneath it. My frock coat is still in need of some alterations but I've got it on my dress form right now and all the textures look awesome.

Wow, haven't logged onto this site in a loooooong time. Been too busy with writing my book and...well...life...LOL.
Anyway, just wanted to throw out a few Victorian clothing/costuming tips: First off, do not be fooled into thinking that everything labelled "corset" is actually a real corset. There's a lot of lingerie-type stuff out there made with plastic boning, which can bend, poke, warp, and just generally make a gal miserable. It'll kind of squeeze you the desired figure, but if you want to really be corseted, you'll need a steel-boned model. Someone suggested eBay as a good source, and it's true. I highly recommend a company called Meschantes. They have an eBay store, where you can get some really good deals on CUSTOM-MADE corsets (SO superior to an off-the-rack corset, as the custom will be an exact fit for you), and they also have a website: www.meschantes.com. Check them out. I just ordered a heavy-duty training corset in natural-colored cotton and no front busk opening from them. Even with shipping and handling and all that jazz, the total was only about $140. Considering that a real-deal corset can cost $300 or more, that is a fantastic deal. Second, there's a website called Truly Victorian Clothing Patterns. Google 'em up. They've got a ton of great Victorian clothing patterns, including those for corsets, hats, petticoats, hoops and bustles. Their patterns aren't outrageously priced, and my understanding is that one can easily mix and match bits of one pattern with bits from another pattern (like, say, the sleeves from one bodice with the body of another). In addition, they have all their patterns broken up by time period: Hoop, Early Bustle, Natural Form, Late Bustle, etc. If I can sweet-talk my man into getting me a sewing machine for Christmas, I may never wear 21st-century clothing again, LOL. Anyway, there's my two cents. Carry on!
