Let me start by saying that this is an absolutely amazing cast. It’s only a highlights recording, therefore it only teases you. Joke de Kruijf is a wonderful Christine Daae. Her voice is pure and sweet, yet strong. Her version of Denk Aan Mij (Think of Me) is beautiful. Henk Poort is an amazing Phantom, perhaps my favorite. He is strong, yet shows that he can be gentle. His entrance in De Spiegel (The Mirror) is impressive. He is forceful when he comments about Raoul, but when Christine replies to him he becomes very gentle, all most child like. Slowly, he becomes more forceful as his image becomes apparent in the mirror. Joke de Kruijf’s response is perfect, she’s ecstatic. Peter de Smet’s Raoul is not as strange as some people have made him out to be (in my opinion). He is just quite into his performance and puts emphasis where some of us aren’t used to hearing it. Het Spook Van De Opera (The Phantom of the Opera) is quick paced. Henk is strong at the end of this song, along with Joke. Now, the important song, Melodieen Van De Nacht (The Music of the Night). Henk delivers this song wonderfully. He is very gentle at parts, but becomes stranger as he progresses. He easily builds the song up and then suddenly eases back, letting the words flow freely. Prima Donna is done quite well by the rest of the main characters, a nice balance of everything. Meer Vraag Ik Van Jou (All I Ask of You) is a beautiful ballad where Joke and Peter do a remarkable job. The part where Henk is on the angel is all most heart wrenching. Henk is very powerful in the end, but his "Christine… Christine," is very moving. Kon Ik Maar Even Bij Je Zijn (Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again) is marvelous. Joke does very well with this song, she puts feeling into this song and it’s evident, too. Er Is Geen Weg Terug (Past the Point of No Return) is phenomenal. Both Henk and Joke put emotion into this song and it’s really well done. The Phantom’s unmasking at the end of this song is memorable. Henk truly sounds surprised and disgusted when Christine takes his mask off. The Finale is astonishing. Henk adds a laugh after greeting Raoul and it’s heart wrenching. Christine sounds crushed and mortified, yet strong. Raoul comes across as anxious. When the Phantom sends Raoul and Christine away you can truly feel the emotion that Henk has put into his performance. The entire cast is astounding and it’s a shame that this is only a highlights recording. If you don’t all ready own this, get it! Your really missing out on some great performers.

I'm very fickle with these foreign Phantoms, and am now recommending Henk Poort as the best. He is a lovely emotional Phantom, with a very moving "Christine, warum...? Warum...?" on the Angel. Like Alexander he has a strength there as well. The final lair is the best out of all the recordings I own - he even includes the laugh, which is rather heart-breaking actually. Peter de Smet is the most hilarious Raoul ever and needs to be heard to be believed. The ending of the first act is the British ending. Very nice, though it can't be healthy to the ear-drums. The language is easy enough to follow as the CD insert has the lyrics, though no pictures which would've been nice. It is only the highlights, but it is definitely worth the money.
